Tomorrow, Friday, September 28, will be a Jeans Day in the Buffalo office. This month’s charity is independent, non-profit Meals on Wheels of Western New York! So, rock that denim for a great cause!
Read on for a little more information about this very special cause…
The mission of Meals on Wheels (MOW) is to delivery daily, nutritious meals and to provide related support services to those members of our community who have limited ability to shop and/or prepare meals for themselves.
But, as many will tell you, there is much more to Meals on Wheels than healthy food. Their volunteers, who visit daily with frail and ill elderly and disabled individuals, serve as a critical link between that person and his/her family, loved ones, and/or neighbors. Each volunteer is trained to watch out for troubling developments in each home – a recipient who seems short of breath or increasingly forgetful, an unsafe condition in the house (too much or too little heat, scattered debris that may precipitate a fall, etc.) – and committed to reporting such incidents. A watchful set of eyes can provide a much-needed level of comfort to an out-of-town daughter or a working son.
And then there is the smile that inevitably lights up the face of each meal recipient when they look out their window to see a Meals on Wheels volunteer approaching. For many of the homebound people they serve, human contact, conversations, and laughs may be all too infrequent. In fact, some program participants do not see another human being other than a MOW volunteer all week. The importance of the daily visit is, quite simply, immeasurable.
Meals on Wheels services over 850,000 meals annual to our community through 1500 volunteers.
Thank you in advance for your participation! Remember that while jeans are allowed, the rest of the Business Casual Dress Code still applies.
